I was pulled from the course at mile 96.5.
I arrived at the final aid station at 12:43 PM, which gave me 1 hour and 16 minutes to finish the race. I was told I needed about 60-70 minutes to run the final 4.6 miles to the finish. .7 miles uphill, 3.9 miles downhill and flat road. The volunteers said they thought I was going to die and kept telling me, “You’ve done enough”. They appeared to be moving extra slow when I kept asking them for water and Ice. I think they were just trying to keep me at their aid station longer so I could recover and then quit. I refused to voluntarily quit. After cooling down for about 12 minutes, I left Millard Campground with a little over an hour left to cover 4.6 miles to the finish.
Apparently, I did not look well, I was not answering most of the questions the volunteers were asking me at the previous aid station (Millard Campground, mile 95.8), the two runners in front of me got heat stroke and were pulled from the course and sent to the hospital in an ambulance, and the female runner behind me was airlifted (I was told) due to heatstroke. The aid station people eventually drove a black SUV up the fire road to find me and grabbed me and made me stop. We argued for 10-15 minutes, and I finally gave in stopped around 1:22 PM (38 minutes until the race was ending). I got a ride to the finish line to see the last runner collapse 2 feet from the finish line. He was put into an ambulance while I lay down in the grass.
I am extremely disappointed. I wanted the chance to finish the face. I know I looked bad and I had lost a lot of blood through pooing and vomiting. I was very low on calories and was nauseated due to the blood pooling in my stomach. I am not sure if I would have finished, but I had a shot with about 65 minutes left to cover the easiest part of the course. Although it was over 100 degrees, and I was barely hanging on after numerous barfing episodes throughout the night and morning. I would later find out that I had lost 15-20 lbs. during the race, weighing in close to 150 lbs. My normal weight before Hardrock 100 was 182 lbs. At TRT, I dropped to 160 lbs., but gained nearly 10 lbs. back in recovery, only to drop down to nearly 150 lbs. after AC100. I look emaciated. I look and feel horrible. I am seeking medical help from the VA to find out why I am bleeding so much.
I hope to remain a part of this sport.
