The New York City Marathon's unique mix of athletics, neighborhood spirit, and international media attention soon attracted the world's best runners to the annual fall race. The first race was held in 1970. 127 runners paid the $1 entry fee. The course looped Central Park several times. Fred Lebow changed the course six years later which would run through five New York boroughs.
The race now attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the more than $600,000 in prize money, but also for the chance to excel in the media capital of the world before two million cheering spectators and 315 million worldwide television viewers. As any one of the more than 700,000 past participants will attest, crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the great thrills of a lifetime.

Notes: Good luck Meb... Found this to the internet:
Elite marathon runner Meb Keflezighi plans to run both the ING New York City Marathon and compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials, Runner's World reports. Keflezighi, who won the NYC Marathon in 2009, is the only elite American runner planning to run both races, which are just two months apart.
That might seem like ample time to rest, but Keflezighi must place in the top three at the Trials to make the Olympic team, no easy feat coming off—he hopes—a repeat of his 2009 win in New York. And this year's race is stacked with top competitors. Genbre Gebremariam, who took third in this year's Boston Marathon, and Edna Kiplagat, the bronze medalist at Virgin London Marathon, both plan to compete in New York this November.
"This timing and challenge is very similar to 2004, when I won the silver medal at the Olympic Games and was the runner-up in the ING New York City Marathon 70 days later," Keflezighi told Runner's World.
