About Nitro Turkey and the Little Turkeys Race
Point Pinole Regional Shoreline is home to more than 100 bird species, but none is more elusive than the fabled Nitro Turkey. A remnant from the park's history as a dynamite production facility, the Nitro Turkey (Gobblus nitrum) was once found in abundance along the park's trail.
Now appearing only on Thanksgiving Day, Nitro Turkey is always eager to promote healthy runs on the trails and to test his own running skills against other "little turkeys"! Sadly, Nitro Turkey's sensitive feet and lack of shoes (it's hard to find size 33 extra wides) have thus far blocked his dreams of victory over the little turkeys. But hope springs eternal in the turkey breast, and he is hoping that this will be his year!
The "Little Turkeys Race" will begin at 8:45.
About the 5K and 10K
The 5K and 10K will begin at 9:00. Both are loop courses. The 5K is entirely on fire trails. The 10K has one small section (approximately 1/2 mile) on a paved asphalt trail. Both courses offer mild trails with just a few small hills. Both also have spectacular views of the bay. On a clear day you can see up to 5 bridges and 6 counties!
For children waiting for family and friends to finish, there is a playground beside the start/finish area. Nitro Turkey has promised to share with the children.
