Notes: We had a perfect running morning and a fairly fast course that measured 6.22 on my Garmin for the very small 10K event. The 5K and 10K started at the same time and used the same course, 1 loop for 5K and 2 loops for 10K. Once the runners spread out, I could count that I was in 10th place, but no idea of which runners would run 5K and which would run 10K. By 1-1/2 miles, I had moved to 6th, and Age Group buddy Larry was immediately ahead of me in 5th. I knew Larry was running 5K but thought maybe I could reel him in before he finished. That didn't happen, and the first 4 runners gradually disappeared out of sight up ahead. No more passing, I was close enough to see Larry finish his 5K and gave him thumbs up as I went by. Not knowing which of the first 4 runners stopped at 5K, I knew that I was anywhere in the top 5 spots, even possibly first though I seriously doubted that. No one was close behind me, so I basically just kept pressure on myself to hold pace and speed up a little throughout the second 5K. This resulted in a negative split 10K by about a minute, 22:27/21:27. I eventually found out that I had taken 2nd overall, which was also 2nd Masters, as the winner was 41 and snagged both awards. Anyway, go Gray Power, whether it's 40+ or 60+, but especially 60+! Out of many pacing techniques I have attempted and sometimes crashed with, the one applied on this gorgeous day is by far my most enjoyable and in my opinion nets the best time result.
