Fitness StatementI believe that ultra running sets a metaphor for life and keeps me spiritually, emotionally, physically and psychologically balanced. I run as an national advocate for Health Awareness and Risk Reduction in our Veteran, Citizen and Youth Populations and founded OneLifeWarrior.org and the Resiliency Run. Running saved my life and led me out of a dark forest following my last combat deployment as an Army Colonel and I am grateful for every mile in the cool morning air... I am now organizing a 100k Ultra Run in Panama.
Quote“Live to run, run to live. Really.”
Running Achievements2010 - 21 half marathons in 21 days for Resiliency Run.
2011 - 5 marathons in 5 days for Resiliency Run.
2012 - 100K in Chagres National Forest, Panama

I run to advocate Health Awareness and Risk Reduction in our at risk veterans' populations...

Recovering from a marathon in a cold, driving rain yesterday. Took a three mile walk to try to work out some of the kinks...easy week ahead, then back into it for the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of the month...

run Wow...cold and driving rain! That sounds tough. Keep up the great workouts!!!

Ran the "Rail Trail" along the Kennebec River in Augusta, Maine today. This incredible route is on an old rail bed and follows the contours of one of Maine's most beautiful valleys. Prepping for the Portland (Maine) Marathon in just a few weeks...

run That sounds beautiful!!! I would LOVE to visit Maine someday...it's on my bucket list for sure. Good luck in the Portland Marathon :)

runnerGood luck Jack in the Las Vegas Half Marathon this weekend.
Bob Anderson 12/2/11 4:08 pm
runnerMajor bummer, Bob. Plane was almost three hours late coming in and I missed number pick up...it was a little bit of a stretch in that I had to work in Maine Saturday...but no cigar. So disappointed.
Jack Mosher 12/4/11 6:55 pm
runnerI can know how you feel. Something like this has happened a couple of times to me and it just makes you feel terrible. But it happened...put it behind you...
Bob Anderson 12/4/11 7:12 pm
runnerThanks, Bob. We fought a 200 headwind the entire way from Maine and had to stop for extra fuel in Colorado (I'm actually here on business as well as the marathon) and it just put me past my starting line number pickup closing time. I will heed your wisdom, but I feel completely vacant...such a let down.

runnerHow is everything? Looks like you are getting in some good miles this week. Are you all set for the half marathon this weekend in Vegas?
Bob Anderson 11/29/11 5:51 pm
runnerHi Bob!! Thanks for the check in!! I'm ready to go and looking forward to running the half. I'm there for a conference that week and hope to get in some good miles while I'm there in addition to the race. Spend Thanksgiving in Panama prepping the Cloud Forest Challenge 100K trail network there and we're looking forward to our first test runners in April!! You're invited!!
Jack Mosher 11/30/11 1:41 pm
runnerGood to hear from you. Sounds like you are getting things set for Panama. Thanks for the invite but I don't think my body can handle 62 miles (100k)...
Bob Anderson 11/30/11 5:46 pm
runnerRemember, Bob, the run is a four day challenge. And judging by your half marathon times, you body is doing just fine these days! Talk soon.
Jack Mosher 12/1/11 8:28 am
runnerIs that going to be 25k per day for four days? Sounds like it is going to be a really exciting event in Panama.
Bob Anderson 12/1/11 10:26 am
runnerYes, Bob. It's roughly 25K per day with some days more difficult in terms of terrain, but shorter....others that the runners can stretch their legs and get some miles behind them. John and I have some more work to do and will be launching the website as soon as we feel better. I believe his is sending you an update as I write...
Jack Mosher 12/1/11 1:26 pm
runnerI look forward in getting that from John...

runnerHi Bob!! It was a cold start at 36 degrees, but a great day to run as the temperature warmed to 50 toward the end of the marathon. I was pleased with my run, although I still haven't cracked the code on my fuel, pre race carb load as I really felt depleted at about mile 22 and had to really push hard through to the finish. Of all the marathons that I have run, I have never felt that type of "no fuel in the tank" exhaustion...any ideas???
Jack Mosher 10/31/11 8:21 am
runnerSo the weather was great for running. I do not Carbo load anymore. I would run out of energy in route. Here is what I now do, I eat an eight oz lean piece of lean meet, a big helping of mash potatoes fully loaded with butter, and steamed vegs. I drink extra water (four 8 oz bottles of water) during the day before and then at dinner I will have a glass of red wine and add water to it until I have had four glasses in total (1/4 strength). I will eat a glu pack ten minutes before the start of the race and then another one at 6 miles. This is for a half marathon but for a marathon I would take two additional glu packs at 13 miles and 20 miles. I take about one mile to take it all. After a half for recovery I drink two bottles of gatorade and will eat a whole bag of Fritos. This works for me.
Bob Anderson 10/31/11 9:03 am
runnerWhat suprised me is that I did the whole regimented carb load on this run and felt much less powerful where I expected to stride to a strong finish, Bob. I think it was a step back. I like your suggestion and will do likewise for Las Vegas in a few weeks. It's food I crave when I run anyway and it makes sense to me. Thanks for the suggestion!!
