Telework day so I got to run from home on the rolling hills of Maryland - always a welcome change from the flat land running in DC!

Ran with Steve again today on the National Mall. The rain helped reduce the number of tourists and allowed us a chance to really kick out the jams on the last couple of miles!
Friday, May 11th, 2012
Ran at lunch time with my running pal Steve. We did a brisk tempo run down the National Mall, past the Washington Monument, the WWII Memorial, up to the Lincoln Memorial, down along the Potomac River, past the Jefferson Memorial, the Tidal Basin the Holocaust Museum and back down the National Mall past the Smithsonian Castle, the Hirschorn Art Museum, the Air Space Museum and the American Indian Museum.
I am so lucky to have such an interesting running route! Of course this time of year we have to share it with thousands of tourists and school tour groups! Of course I guess you could say it is good training for running in big races with a crowded field!
This sounds like a great course.... Bob Anderson 5/11/12 11:13 pm

Teleworking today so I got to run from home and do the rolling hills of Maryland. Beautiful weather - sunny & in the 60's.
I am trying again to post my recap of the Frederick (MD) Half Marathon I ran yesterday. Starting where I left off... The race started promptly at 7 AM and the weather was great - it was misty & cool for the first 6 miles – in the low 60’s. Then the mist lifted but it stayed cool.
After the first mile’s craziness, I found and ran with the 1:40 pace group for about 8 miles. Since my goal was to break 1:40, I pulled ahead of them around mile 9 and kept them behind me for the rest of the race.
The race course is very nice - much better than when I ran it last in 2008. We toured the historic downtown area and then went through some beautiful old residential areas and around a park with a nice little lake. It wasn’t too hilly – but there was a challenging hill in the final mile before you finished with a lap around the horse racing track at the fairgrounds to finish right in front of the grandstand full of cheering spectators..
I carried a gel pack pinned inside my shorts - vanilla with caffeine. I felt myself starting to fade a little at the 9 mile mark. So I pulled out my gel and ate it. What a nice power boost it gave me! I could myself accelerate.
I came across the finish line with a gun time of 1:40:01 & a chip time of 1:39:57. So I made my goal of breaking 1:40 - barely.
I finished 3rd in my age group (2nd place was less than a minute ahead of me). There were 4,009 finishers. I was 236th overall and was the 193th male finisher.
My Garmin watch kept my splits and I am proud to say that my fastest mile was Mile 13!
The finisher's medal is very nice and they gave everyone a really nice warm-up jacket.
One other nice stat - at the 8 mile mark I was in 261st place – which means I passed 25 people in the last 5 miles.
That’s my report – next big race is the Baltimore 10 Miler on June 16.
Marc Wolfson 5/7/12 1:14 pmNice race report...like to see more of those on here. Richard Stiller 5/7/12 1:27 pm Marc, this is great and ties in well with one of my planned tips. Hope you don't mind if I use your race feedback as an example. Richard is right! We need to see more of this type of information on our site.

Yesterday, I did the Frederick Half Marathon. This is the third time I have run this race, but the last time was 4 years ago. Here is a race day recap that only fellow runners would appreciate reading.
I got up at 3:50 AM, had a light breakfast and left for Frederick at 4:30. I was parked at the county fairgrounds at 5:30. I did my pre-race routine potty break, muscle massage with my roller "stick" and meditation/breathing relaxation with my I-pod.
The race started promptly at 7 AM and the weather was great - it was misty. Marc Wolfson 5/7/12 11:52 am
